why i love kurt vonnegut...

http://www.rense.com/general69/vonnegutsblues.htm

Read it!! You will love him too! ...unless you're a conservative, right-wing Republican that hates music... but I don't think I know anybody like that.

My favorite Vonnegut quote:
"If you really want to piss off your parents, and you don't have the nerve to be gay, be an artist."

Right?

a request...

We've just found out some crappy news in the family. It seems my sister and brother-in-law, after finally getting their boys home after months of stress and worry, have been handed another challenge to handle. Scott's mother, Anita, has been diagnosed with liver and pancreatic cancer and the prognosis isn't good. She is a wonderful woman, who I've enjoyed shocking for fun for the last 7 years or so... she's just good people. She's also really fiesty and is going to fight like hell. I hate that my family has been given yet another thing to deal with, but I know there's no choice.

So my request to all of you is to pray if you do it, or just send some positive energy to Southwest Minnesota. Everyone is, of course, dealing with it with strength and grace, continuing to impress me daily... Keep them in mind please!

after recent conversations with few people, i would like to know your thoughts:

Is it possible to be friends with an ex? JUST friends? Inquiring minds want to know.

why you will be in mankato next fall...

The 2007-2008 Season for MSU was announced today and it's a doozy! I am PUMPED!!!

First of all, I will be directing a show for the mainstage season at the end of November and if you read this blog or even know of this blog, I KNOW I will be expecting your presence at my directorial debut (of a non-musical!!!) of 'DOG SEES GOD'!

I saw this show last winter with Erick Off-Broadway and I fell in love with it. It's a black comedy about the Peanuts characters in high school. Black comedy, you say? Yes, it begins with Charlie Brown at Snoopy's grave...Snoopy got rabies and ate Woodstock so he had to put down. Black comedy. I love it!

Stay tuned for more theater news... I'm so excited to do theater again!!!!!

tidbits...

just had another family night--barbecue was our delight tonight. how could you deny this weather a barbecue?! seriously. love the fam. yup, ALL of them.

lex isn't saying 'pussy' anymore. i guess it was wrong afterall...

my nephews have officially taken over my fridge, with this week's addition of tiny baby carter and chubby baby logan in their 'i <3 NYC' onesies, bringing the total number of baby pic on my fridge to an all-time high. worse yet, i show them off to people as they enter my house. for a lady firmly confirmed in her singleton nature with purely singleton-like-minded friends, this development, coupled with how much i actually enjoy my job, and how i can't apparently just date randomly, made one of my girls accuse me of being a 'serial monogomist' and another called me a 'breeder'.

if i am those two things...can i still be bad ass? i am willing to admit that perhaps one day, roots are maybe in my future pehaps--but i am not willing to give up my well-earned bad ass rep...and you can't make me.

this weekend lies in duluth, the town that knew me when...for a wedding of people i knew when...perhaps there's a future blog in this...

muchlove & finally, HAPPY SPRING!!!

why i can't stop giggling today...

I taught Lex a song today that included the phrase, "Giddyup Horsey" repeatedly while doing some cool clapping. He loves it. He wants to sing it every minute...in gym class...in the grocery store...everywhere we go today!

Issue is, when he, being a 2 year old, says 'giddyup horsey', it sounds remarkably like "Get Up Pussy".

And by remarkably, I mean, exactly.

I've turned him into a shorter early 90's Prince.

And I can't stop giggling about it. Is that wrong?

why i gotta be about change...

Miles Davis said, "If you wanna be an artist, you gotta be about change."

The man is briliiant, obviously a genius, but I wish he would give a few hints on how to change effortlessly, without drama, without grieving, without uncertainty. As if, we artists, we who strive to bring clarity and revolution to the masses, or at the very least, entertainment to the status quo, we should be able to change and watch our relationships change and be a catalyst for change...without the pain that so often accompanies it.

In the month of March alone, I watched my life change in more ways that I ever saw coming. New opportunities, loss of old friends, amazing gifts, hurtful actions. The ebb and flow of life, huh? The absolute, undeniable pendulum that is this journey is at times heart-breaking, inspiring, comedy and tragedy all within one deep inhalation of good, clean Minnesotan air.

And it's all stil changing. New doors are opening in old friendships, and it might be time to shut old doors for good, no matter how many years I spent walking into them, I just don't trust the light right now. And it's all still changing. New habits being born out of rejection to the past, old habits whisper for me to come back, and maybe I should. And it's all still changing. Another month may pass with me being able to say, dang, my whole world just changed again...and that would make it the fifth month in a row of new worlds, but it's all good...

Because I'm an artist. So I gotta be about change.

why i love uptown...

1. Sometimes I come home to peace rallys and activism in its most beautiful form and it's freakin' inspiring and powerful to be around.

2. All the cool kids live here...more importantly, I live within 2 blocks of 6 of my favorite people in this world so I never have to get in my car on weekends. Fun is a block and a half away!!

3. There are multiple lakes to walk (or bike) around within 4 blocks of my house. You can get sweaty and have a mad workout or you can leisurely stroll. Everyone's doin' it! And I have never gone down to one of the lakes without seeing at least one person that is completely fascinating...which leads me to

4. People watching is better in Uptown than anywhere else in the Metro area. If anyone wants to debate this, bring it and we'll compare. Last week alone, I was approached by a man wanting to do my Tarot with Elvis Tarrot cards, I saw two people (one of them a total punk, mohawk and all, the other could have been an accountant by aesthetic standards) engaged in some serious mouth babies on a park bench in front of my house, I made a deal with 2 Pakistani neighbors that for a new cell phone, I would teach their wives Pilates, and ran into someone I knew from high school in Marshall. Top that.

5. My apartment is across the street from the best happy hour and PhotoHunt in town AND the Uptown Diner, home of the best veggie burger in the universe...though this may become or be percieved as a problem by some.:)

6. You can participate in actual city-living here...like public transportation. Taxis and city buses are gifts for the urban--take advantage, people! Musicians play on the street, multiple languages are spoken all around you, everything you could concievably need is within the nieghborhood--it's a city, god bless it.

7. Broke? Bored? Crabby? Go for a walk, go window-shopping, grab a coffee and observe. You WILL meet someone new, you WILL hear or see something amazing, you WILL rise above your current status.

8. It's been home to me for a long time, ever since Arts High really. Whenever I came to Minnapolis, I had to go to Uptown. When I finally moved here, I had to live in Uptown. That was my only pre-requisite and the only thing I knew for sure at that point in my life. I had to live in Uptown. I was totally right. It's been everything I thought it would be. HOME!!!

Can you tell I'm just beginning to realize that I'm leaving again? I feel like I just got here.

But such is the life of a gypsy...
